My hull has 2 pinstripes (tape) about 1/2" wide; it has cracks, etc; how can this be taken off? or should I sand a little and put 1" stripe over the not so good looking stripes; by the way it is really stuck on good...any comments would be helpful.

Hair dryer

Apply a bit of heat and peel off s-l-o-w-l-y. Might have to use a credit card to start it especially if it's started breaking up into little pieces. Rick http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beneteau393/ 393 group

another option

the hair dryer method works, but I read about another method and used it to remove the boat name and lettering(with great success).Spray some WD 40 on the vinyl stripe and use a razor blade to remove it. I found that the WD 40 gave a good bit of lubrication for the razor blade to slide and peel off the vinyl easily...work slow to avoid gouging your gel coat. A little acetone at the end cleans up the remaining adhesive glue. Good luck....

Razor blades rule.

I used a razor blade in a holder to get mine off. It was last winter and cold, and I think that helped. As i was slowly easing it off, I stumbled slightly and heard "zzzippp" from the blade. I thought i had gouged the gel coat, but NO, the noise was a couple of feet of tape that had come free. Hmmm, I thought, let's try that on purpose this time! So i took a rush at it and off came another three feet. The whole thing was done in four minutes flat. As stephen said, a little acetone on a rag cleans up the residue. I haven't tried the WD40, sounds good though, as long as it doesn't make the adhesive gooey, which would spoil the zip effect! Good luck.

Had to use a heat gun on mine.

The hair dryer was just not hot enough although I was working in April in Chicago weather. Be careful not to get too close to the gelcoat. It was still a long process to remove 2 sheer stripes from a 36. I had two helpers and it took us the better part of 16 hours. It was worth it though to get rid of the tourquise color. I used razor blade also too but also a plastic scraper that melted a couple of times when it got too close to the heat gun.

Steamer!

Tom: My vinyl guy removed my old stripes with a steamer from Home Depot. I must tell you that it was very easy and quick. I think that he paid $40 but probably saved 4 hrs. of labor. I was a believer in the "eraser" but I may have to change my mind after seeing this thing work so easily.

WD 40

be careful where you use WD 40. It is a silicone lube. You will never get paint to stick to any surface that has had wd 40 on it.

Heat gun, Plastic Scraper, and "Goof Off"

Just completed re-striping my boat, a 42 footer. I used a 700 degree heat gun and a plastic scraper. Took about 3 hours per side. Used "Goof Off" graffiti remover to take the adhesive residue off the hull. Goof Off is safe for gel coat.

Use the right tools

The pros at paint and body shops, and companies that make the supplies like 3M, all say to do the job the same way. You can use a "vinyl trim eraser wheel" that you buy at an auto body supply shop. This is a "rubber" wheel that fits in a drill, if can grind off the vinyl without damaging he paint. Honest. It gets consumed as you work. 3M makes them. Or you do it the traditional way, using a heat gun (hair dryer might work, paint remover could be too hot) which softens the glue and vinyl, allowing it to peel off without cracking and tearing so much. And, you buy a spray can of "vinyl trim and adhesive remover" which 3M also makes (a buck more than the generic stuff but it might work better) and that stuff also releases the solvent very nicely. Either way takes some patience. Goof off is great stuff but the tape remover is designed for just this job on just these materials, a bit more effective I think. WD-40? Sorry, that's not silicone. Check their MSDS. No silicone in it, it's mainly kerosene AFAIK. Good for a cleaner and lubricant...but not the world's best adhesive solvent. Save the WD-40 for squeaks.<G>
