Tried out my new #2 Reef this evening

And I like it!

Blowing 15, gusting 25 this evening and I was solo, so time to reef. I tied in the new second reef on my TRWK, roller-furled my jib down to about 110 and cranked on the backstay. The jib shape was pretty awful, so I stuck to close reaching rather than straight-up thrashing to weather. The boat sailed along very well and settled into the groove easily. I sat in the cockpit rather than out on the rail and stayed nice and dry. I was the only boat in sight for the first hour or so. I picked up my mooring under sail too! I was flaking the main at the mooring when I heard that monster Doritos-bag sound that an expensive laminated jib makes when tacking and turned around to see a J-22 from the local yacht club swinging by to have a look. That's cool. My whole boat cost less than his Thursday night practice sails.

Anybody got a Tall Rig RF 110 or blade jib that they'd like to part with?

Now that was really funny !

When I was looking for a new main sail for my boat as the other one was falling apart and being held together with my sewn on patches and hot glue, one sail-maker gave me a quote for ~~ $1,200. Sorry, I have a tough time spending $1,200 for a new main to put on my boat, which cost $4,000.
Yes, I race PHRF now and then ... but I'm not going to get into this "see who can spend the most $$ on his boat routine." One bad tack, and all those $$ go to waste.

By the way. Best way I have found to attach tell tales to the luff of my head sails. Hot glue!

You guys are wrong headed, you need to encourage these racers!

Tell them they really need to change their sails every 2 seasons! Then buy their cast-offs for pennies on the dollar... I got a great Ulman 155 that way from someone who raced his Capri 22!

Um I spent HALF as much on sails (so far) as I did the boat (I've never had good sails, so I'm splurging, all the while knowing I'll never see the money back), you'll also have no difficulty spotting us on the water:

I have a 110 RF sail that I would part with if you are interested. When I purchased the Capri 22 from Schnool the RF system was part of the package but not in use. I don't believe he ever used it being the "go fast" guy that he is. Being the lazy guy I am when I raised the mast I had the RF ready to go and hung the 110 while waiting for my new 155 to arrive. So I used the 110 exactly once.

As I recall the sail is in nice condition. I can take photos of the sail as a whole and any parts you want to see up close. I had it listed in the for sale section before the board went down. You can e-mail me at cctaylor3 at yahoo dot com if you want to take this conversation off board.

Cheers,
Curt

Curt is SORT of right.. I bought the boat it had ONLY a RF....
here shortly after launch

and

You can see the sail was actually in good shape (and it just sat shortly after the picture was taken).
I quickly found a used hank on Ulman 155 (back to the racer changing sails every couple seasons, that I got the $300 bargain from)... and I wanted something smaller than the 155 so I also found a pretty beat 110 hank on to compliment as a #2.

That's a bargain 110 with a luff tape though.

Looking at that picture, she was kind of rough after she first splashed... Thank god she cleaned up well.

Ok, NOW I'll be critical of myself...

In that photo...
A) the genoa foot is hung up on the lifeline...
B) the mainsail isn't all the way up (should be all the way to the black line at the top of the mast, which is about 1.5" from the top)...
C) I think the genoa is sheeted to tight given the conditions... the main is trimmed perfectly. Might be an optical illusion though, telltales seem to be flowing correctly.
D) all 3 of us should be on the next seat up, so flatten us more, it would have been faster.

But what's real cool? The race committee took the picture!
We finished 6th overall for that race (bad)... if I followed A-D above, we'd have been 1st. Yep it requires that much attention to detail.
That picture was literally seconds after we crossed the line...
Here we are RIGHT at the line:

Race committee wasn't taking photo's of your boat, but of the beautiful lake & shoreline. Your boat got in the way :)

I tried racing Sunday; 2 Catalina 30 TR's, a Catalina 27 TR and me. It was very windy. Going over 25 mph at times. Well they beat me to the first mark. Then a long downwind leg where I passed the 27 and got right on the tail of one of the 30's just before the leeward mark. Then I decided to drop out as the winds had built to over 20 continuous and the waves/rollers were just killing me.

But that downwind leg was one hell of a ride. Broad reach most of the way and the wind would sometimes shift directly to the rear, and cause me to round up. ( and the other Boats) I only had the 110 up.

Oh well .... next week.

He Schnool, do you work? You seem to be on this page morning, noon and night ... .

Hey Shnool-
Those are beautiful sails! I agree that getting downstream from a Corinthian who needs to win races (buy sails) every year is a great place to be. My old boat was a Santana 20 and they are a popular and competitive racing class. If you go to their website, you can find all sorts of gear that was at the nationals last year and for sale this year. Unfortunately for me, apparently the CP-22 never really took off as a one-design racer, so there just isn't a flow of sweet gear to bottom feeders like me.

Nice transformation on Galileo's Dance. I looked at that boat when it was for sale in Ithaca, and it certainly hadn't received a lot of love from the seller. Nothing wrong with it, but boy, what a lot of work to do! Good for you for tackling it.

Snool did a nice job on Galileo's Dance. Although I did not see it before I purchaed it he sent a lot of before and after photos and the work. It was more than I would want to do. All his effort was my gain and part of the reason I purchaesd the boat form him without actually seeing it in person.

I purchased a new 155 RF ( a nice feature when sailing in the evrer changing winds off Buffalo on Lake Erie.) added nice seat cushoins changed the name to Chingaletta and went sailing.

Funny, I purchased my Capri 22 in Ithaca also. That finger lake looked like a beautiful place to sail,

Hersh I remember the other one for sale up there... I was going to look at it the same day I looked at 513... when i looked at 513 I was happy with what I saw... and I was done... I am glad Curt was happy with her. Knowing he was coming from a Capri 18 (also a stellar boat), I knew he'd have fun with her... and no I never expected it to be perfect for him but hopefully serviceable for him for a while with little work.

I look at winter work as something I can do to make my summer sailing more fun when it comes around, sort of sailing when I can't.

That was what it was, I bought the "Dance" because it had the race package.
