tri-color

Hi gang,

I've been replacing my nav. lights with Dr. LED's and have had good success except for the tri-color. Mine is the Aqua Signal 40 masthead anchor, tri-color, and strobe on top of the mast and I had a marina replace the bulbs for me. The light appears to have void areas with no color in the red and green fields from close up. I had my boat at a slip last week and while walking on the land nearby was disappointed in the brightness, too. The anchor light was fine.

I contacted Dr. LED and they think the bulbs were switched. With the indexing pins either opposite or offset, I don't see how the yard could have confused them.

Before someone goes up the mast, has anyone had any issues with DR. LED bulbs only partially working? Since they're for offshore, should I try looking from further away?

i was told to get a red led for the port side light and a green led for the starboard side light as they show brighter than the normal white ones in the fixture ...could it be that the guy had red and green and put them on the wrong color lights...but if that were the case they might look purple in color

The tri-color masthead light is already divided as well as the Dr. LED bulb.

well my info is totally useless for your application...how many diodes does the light have on the color bulb ...maybe get a bulb with more diodes.....or contact Dr led and tell that you need 2 nm of light and what you have is not up to speed

COLREGS Rule 22

I think you need (b) below i.e. 3 mile red & green and 5 mile white. Insist on these ranges from your supplier.Rule 22
Visibility of Lights
The lights prescribed in these Rules shall have an intensity as specified in Section 8 of Annex I to these Regulations so as to be visible at the following minimum ranges:

(a) In vessels of 50 meters or more in length:
a masthead light, 6 miles;
a sidelight, 3 miles;
a towing light, 3 miles;
a white red, green or yellow all-around light, 3 miles.

(b)In vessels of 12 meters or more in length but less than 50 meters in length;
a masthead light, 5 miles; except that where the length of the vessel is less than 20 meters, 3 miles;
a sidelight, 2 miles;
a sternlight, 2 miles, A towing light, 2 miles;
a white, red, green or yellow all-round light, 2 miles.

(c) In vessels of less than 12 meters in length:
a masthead light, 2 miles;
a sidelight, 1 miles;
a towing light, 2 miles;
a white red, green or yellow all-around light, 2 miles.

(d) In inconspicuous, partly submerged vessels or objects being towed;
a white all-round light; 3 miles.
