Traveller Removal

I am getting ready to replace my Traveller on my '84 31H. I have already aquired a ronstan system. The holes line up perfectly. My question is do I have to lift the top of the boat. The area on top of the cabin where the lines run under and the dorades are attached. I tried one of the bolts in the existing traveler and it wouldn't move so I am guessing there are nuts under the track.

Never Mind

Well the old one has been removed. I thought I would give some heads up to future upgrades. The bolts ar just tapped into the fiberglass. There are no nuts on the underside of the turtle top. Out of about 15 bolts 5 came out, 3 of the heads stripped and had to be drilled, and the remaining bolts broke in half and had to be removed with a pair of visegrips. All in all I would guess I spent 5 hours removing the traveler track.

Traveler

I did the same on my H30 last year and had the same results. A few bolts came out a few broke off long and a few broke off short and had to be drilled. Under the fiberglass on my H30 there is a layer of aluminum and the holes for the bolts are tapped. I replaced my traveler with a Garhauer unit that is great. The holes lined right up and it bolted into place once the junk was removed.

Garhauer traveler

I bought the Garhauer MT-1 for $235 you will need to purchase any blocks seperate if needed. If you are going to use your old ones, you can save about $30 each. I replaced them all when I re-did mine. They will ask you for measurements for the holes and what boat it's going on. then it bolts right up. They will hook you up with Guido. He's a really good guy but It takes forever to get a traveler because each one is made to order. With the boat shows all comming up, you should order as soon as possible it could take a month or more once those orders start comming in. But dollar for dollar you will get the best product for the money. (No I don't work for Garhauer) Their rigid boom vangs are another great product for the money. Check the link below.

makingthyme Thank You, Thank You! "purchase any blocks separate if needed"? Do you mean the blocks on the traveler (they are included in the picture on the internet) or do you mean for the Main Sheet Tackle? Did you replace the Main Sheet Tackle with a 4 to 1 or 6 to 1 Garhauer?

Blocks

The blocks for the traveler are included. The mainsheet blocks are seperate. I went with a 6:1 purchase. It's sooooo sweet! Everything moves so smooth now, it's like a whole different boat.

makingthyme Thank You, Again! I purchased the 4 to 1 last November at the boat show in St Pete, FL, but have not had a chance to get out and use it, I was thinking that I should have gone 6 to 1, so I will put that back on my list when I order the Traveler. Since our boats are the same, maybe I could use the specs from your traveler order, will you share that with me? Or a copy of the Garhauer order? I am listed in the Owner's Directory 31_83-87 if you care to e-mail me direct. bill

You're best bet is to call Garhauer direct and deal with them. Every boat could be different including the same model and year. Depending on what travelers they had on the shelf at the time, the H30 and the H31 could be completely different. They didn't build boats the same way they do today. I'll look at the order, but I think all that it says is traveler for Hunter 30 with the Garhauer model number. the blocks I purchased by size, single double and triple based on what was on the boat previously.

broken shakle on traveler car

Did you remove the stopping blocks? I managed to bteak the shakle on the main car and I was told I need to remove the end block to get the car off the track; I don't know if those have nuts under the liner or not.

no nuts

There are no nuts unber the liner. The bolts will seem very hard to remove. Just take you time. I suggest you set the screwdriver on top of the bolt and tap it with a hammer to help break the threads loose. Paul
