Traveller for 216? Worth the money?

West Marine is having a sale on travelers for about 5 more days. It looks like I could piece one together for in the neighborhood of $450 or so, which is half of what Hunter wants for theirs. Since it could only travel the width of the cockpit between the seats, would that be enough added control capability to warrant the cost? I know the 470 has a similar setup, and that's why I ask. I did see the rope traveler rigged across the transom that was posted, but don't want to block off the main ingress/egress points of the boat. Thoughts? Bob

I Think Its Worth It, But Another Option

is to check on the Garhauer systems (see link). I sailed for years using the vang for twist control but there is little question the people who installed travelers had more sail trim flexibility. Yes, you do have to step over it and it will bite your leg from time to time, so consider that too. Rick D.

Windward sheeting?

Can anybody talk about (Harken's) windward sheeting setup? Is it nice to have? Whenever I look at traveler hardware, I get overwelmed by all the options for where the cam cleats go (ends of track or on the car), how much purchase to get, etc, so I put it off for another year. I have a H23.5. ...RickM...

Mid-cockpit Traveler

Although we have chosen to use the rope arrangement on our 216, I would think that due to the fact that the Mid-cockpit traveler is actually operating on the mid part of the boom, that the amount of control should be about the same - certainly in the range in which we normally adjust the traveler. Hunter likes to talk to customers about such things. You might just give their customer service up at the factory a call. 1-860-739-3033

cams

Rick Mac: The 26.5 has the cams at the end of the traveler. The 28.5 has them on the car. The end cams are positioned so it's awkward to lock the line down (They point slightly down), and now that I've got cockpit cushions it's a real pain. I REALLY like the cams on the car, and in the future will consider upgrading.

Please keep us informed

Bob, be sure and post what you finally wind up with for your traveler system as most of us 216ers are faced with this dilemma. A photo or two would also be appreciated. Same on your v-berth post.

216 traveler

West Marine was out of stock on the travelers, and the sale only applied to in-stock merchandise! :-( We took the boat out today, and were one of only two boats I saw on the river. Very light wind day, which is where the 216 shines! After seeing how close to the wind we can sail when we have the sails set properly, I'm inclined to say that I may just pass on the idea of rigging a traveler, unless someone can give me a different reason that sounds like it's worth the cost and trouble. We also explored the shallow water limits of the boat, having to completely haul the centerboard a couple of times in the shallows of the Indian River. As new sailors, sudden gusts can be interesting, and we had our share of THOSE today! All in all, with every little quirk that gets ironed out, and with more experience, my wife and I like the boat better all the time! Of course, there IS always the guy, like the one who buys a new Corsair 24 and parks his trailer right next to mine in the marina! I wonder if he knows where all the DROOL on his boat comes from???? :) Bob
