Traveller Clam Cleat

The position of the factory-installed clam cleat is awkward at best. Has anyone moved the clam cleat to where the clutches are on the cabin top (where my finger is)?

That's about where mine are positioned. What boat have you?

On my Catalina 36 I had installed a Garhauer traveler with integral cam cleats, similar to yours. I sawed them off and mounted them where your finger is. Pretty easy job.

It’s one of the nicest upgrades we did (actually my rigger friend did it). He mounted them on the inside of the existing clutches, rather than the outside like you are showing.

How are these cam cleats mounted? Obviously drilled, but what is under/inside the fibreglass? This looks like an upgrade I would like to do. Thanks.

There are aluminum plates located under that area.

I used two small pieces of Starboard and added a cam cleat to the jam cleat. Been working great, especially for single handing, for 16 years.

@rpwillia I can see the purpose and function of what you did.

I have never liked the jam cleat. Every where I have seen them they work for a bit but eventually the line works it’s way loose. I much prefer cam cleats with the line guard to stop the incoming line from rising out of the cam-cleat teeth. Using Dacron or polyester line I have not experienced a cam-cleat failure.
