The orig. setup of the traveler on the "77" Hunter 27 doesn't work well. has anyone added and relocated the traveler to the cabin top? How did you do it and what products did you use? Thanks! Hal

'77, 27 Traveller Location

The PO relocated Tritons' traveller to the cabin top, bridging the companionway hatch. Set back about ten inches from the top edge of the cabin is a set of solid teak risers perhaps six inches high supporting a teak strip (1" x 2") with the traveller track and end stops on top of that. Three part mainsheet blocks with a cam cleat connect to a bail on the boom and to the treveller car with the sheet led into the cockpit. It works well and is out of the way even when going through the companionway. Jerry TRITON

"Work Well"?

As a sailing solution, a traveler at the aft end of the cockpit and mainsheet attaching at the end of the boom are excellent. If you are saying that this location makes it hard to control the mainsail, then describe your issues, and there will be solutions short of moving the traveler. We have found that a little bit of caution in thinking where we are sitting makes the traveler location a minor issue in the cockpit - even with a crew of four. We solve the need for shade with a bimini mounted aft of the boom on the stern pulpit, and a custom awning over the boom as shown at the link below. Moving the traveler above the sliding hatch is a common solution that gets it out of the cockpit, and allows a more complete bimini set-up. But it also makes controlling the mainsail harder, and greatly increases the stress on the boom. If that is the trade-off you are looking for, then do consider a mainsheet fall that attaches to the boom in two or three places to avoid overstressing it. I think this is the standard Hunter solution to mid-boom sheeting. David Lady Lillie
