traveler install

My Mac 25 main sheet manufacturer install is behind you and in the way for outboard motor access. Has anyone replaced this system with a traveler at the companionway opening? How did you like it, was it worth the trouble? I've found a used traveler Rutgerson for $90.00 plus shipping. Let me know. Thanks, Mike.

I have a traveler across the entry on my 26D and love it.
It came that way though so I can't answer your question.

I mine at the companion way and it worked out well. I will add some picts when I get home. Timo42 also didi his 22 but ran a traveler across the two seats. It really cleans and opens up the back of the boat.
Also helpful was consolidating the split backstay into one adjustable stay. I got tired of raking my elbow on the cable everytime I pulled the motor rope.

I installed a traveler just outside the companion way door on my 1970 Venture 24, bolted it to the seats on each side and the keel support board in the center. Modified the keel support board some. Love it. If sail trim and main sail shape is important to you, you will love it. You can really shape the main sail well and can ease the traveler in gusts instead of re sheeting.

here is a picture of my install, very happy with it, moved it forward to make seating easier, don't find it is a problem getting in and out of the companionway, much better when anchored or at dock as main sheet is off to the side, makes a big difference sailing in heavy winds, you can set the heel angle as you wish,

I bought it directly from Garhauer Marine (http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=34) a couple of years ago at a boat show. It was $95 complete.

It is 4 ft long. Because it is moved forward it has the same effect as a longer traveller mounted aft. It does not have a ballbearing car, just a nylon insert to reduce friction and a block on each end of the car. It is similar to the one used on the new Mac 26M. I mounted it with 1/4" s/s bolts and fender washers. I moved the bail forward on the boom to maintain the same angle for the main sheet. It has worked very well for me and am very happy with it, inexpensive but does the job.

I see that some of the Mac26M owners have modified this traveller by adding a double block to each end of the track to increase the purchase. I have not had a problem moving it back and forth under load but this mod would make easier for a woman or kid to control it in heavy winds.

Hi Art, my boat is under a tarp and a foot of snow right now so I can't easily do any measurements. What I did was measure from the old attachment point to the new attachment point on the traveller and moved the bail ahead that amount, so I have the same angle on the mainsheet. I have a picture of my boom below.

If I understand you correctly when you referenced to old attachment point are you refering to the aft end of the boom? My current mainsheet is configured I believe the original configuration with a tang attached to the aft end of the boom then to a 3:1 block system on the stern. I liked how you iinstalled your travller system and wanted to do the same on my Mac 25. The mainsheet system on the stern of the boat just does not work well.

Hi Art, I have a 26S so it came with mid-boom sheeting to begin with. I suppose you will have to install a bail on the boom after the traveler is mounted. The position will be aft of the traveler to provide the optimal angle. You could check the angle on any other Mac C's in your area or ask someone on the list to do a measurement. I don't know how much difference this really makes. I did ask a rigger from a major Mac dealer when I installed my traveler for advice and he told me to keep the angle the same and so that was why I moved the bail on the boom.

Obviously it will require a lot more force to pull the boom down in the middle than at the end so you will have to check the strength of your main sheet tackle and may even have to increase the purchase. I am not familiar with the hardware on your boat and so can not offer any advice here.

I replaced the mainsheet tackle on my boat with a large heavy duty tackle I picked up a flea market for $30. It was originally used as a vang on big boat and came with a nice soft sheet line, top quality blocks and snaps. It is much heavier than I need but works well, feels nice in your hand.
