Has anyone found a can or method that fits in the trash bin area? Joan is looking for something better than current small 1ft high can. Be nice to have something 3/4 the heigth of the bin for holding trash. Any suggestions? Jim S/V Java

Standard bag

We just use a standard plastic tall kitchen bag with tie strings. We cut the string and tie it around the top. We think it works great as long as you don't over fill it.

Can't remember

Jim: I cannot remember what the area looked like but consider going to a sheet metal shop and having them make you a container that is exactly the size you want. They can make it out of galvanized. You can use some silicone caulk on the inside joins to seal it incase anything leaks. Then you can just use tall kitchen bags inside the container.

356 trash can

just use a tall kitchen bag, the kind with the built in ties-unlike scott, we don't cut the strings, just pull them tight. when the bag's near full, there's enough give to pull it off the flange and tie it up

Even better 356 trash solution

Just get the standard white 13 gal kitchen garbage bags and then at Walmart they sell a large wide red rubber band(in kitchen/household area) that fits perfectly around the recessed ridge-band just under the countertop opening to hold the bag in place. I've used it all summer and it works great, plus leaves some room at the bottom of the compartment for me to store my dustpan, cleaning supplies etc etc. The only thing you have to watch in ANY of these solutions is that you not fill the bag TOO full of trash or as you try to force it out the cabinet door when you're emptying it, it will tear the bag on the latch fittings and now you've got coffee grounds or teriyaki sauce on the floor.

Trash bin on H33.5

Speaking of trash bins, on my 1990 Hunter 33.5, I keep a 5 gallon bucket w/trash bag setting on top of the hanging locker in the aft cabin. It's easy access from the galley..I always have the aft cabin door open up against the chart table on the port side. This also makes it easy to throw away those empty beer bottles from the cockpit if the aft cabin port light is open...it drops in below to the bucket...lines up perfect. I discovered this one day by accidently dropping my sunglasses thru that port light and decided that would work good for trash from topside too. A Canadian Solution

Hi Jim, We had a teak shelf built to fit the trash cupboard, and then installed it about half way. That way, any small plastic garbage container will fit, you don't need custom bags, and as others have suggested you can use the bottom part for storage - bags, cleaning supplies, etc.

Two great solutions

Thanks everyone. Two great possiblities are presented with the rubber band and inserting a shelf. Will have to check into both of these. Jim S/V Java

Try a shelf

We had a small shelf installed about 1/4 of the way up from the bottom and put a flexible circular trash can be bought at Wal-mart. It works great.

Tried the rubber bands

They work great, as long as nothing real heavy goes into the bag. Jim

Re: Tried the rubber bands

Well, after a summer using the rubber bands, I can attest to the fact that it can hold at least 12 empty beer cans, 6 bottles and the associated food refuse that would go with that level of consumption.......if you're not getting that level of performance you need to get higher capacity rubber bands :)

Problem is finding big rubber bands

You wouldn't believe the people sending me all over the store trying to find big fat rubber bands. Thought I was on a treasure hunt! Jim

Bungee Cord

Just find or make a Bungee Cord to the correct length. With hooks, it will make for easy on/off.

Re:problem is finding big rubber bands

If you like, email me and I'll go to my Walmart here where I bought the rubber bands last spring and find out what the SKU number is. I too had to intially go all over the store to find the right department but the ones I found fit perfectly and were in the wastebasket/matches/household items etc etc dept.
