we have recently purchased a 27' hunter (79). We haven't actually taken del.on it yet because we live in northeast (a week ago it was covered with 8" of snow). I was visiting the boat on dry land yesterday and noticed that the stern rail doesn't have an opening. We moor our boats in a bay and board via a dinghy. I know that my wife will have a difficult time boarding from the port or starboard sides of the boat. Therefore, I was contemplating the addition of a mahogany platform or step on the stern. Has anyone run into this situation? Boarding at the dock is iffy....we draw 4' and the dock is only that deep at high tide. Thoughts or suggestions?

No fold down ladder?

I thought all the 27s came with a fold down ladder in the stern, with the top rail section removed? If your's doesn't have that, perhaps you can modify what you have? Don B.

Our 1979 27'

Has a swim ladder that looks to be factory installed. There is a section of lifeline in the middle of the rear of the stern rail which can be unclipped, making it easier to get to the ladder. There's another '79 27' in our marina, and it is set up exactly the same way. Gosh, I wonder if someone removed the ladder on your boat for some reason in the past? You might be able to find a used ladder, as say Thifty Mariner or on this site. I hope you and your wife enjoy your boat as much as we have!

Transom Ladder on H27

Here is a picture of the transom ladder on "Break Away", my 1980 H27. I am in the process of adding a 4" x 13" stainless steel step to the top of the fixed portion to allow for a better foot position. The top step is too close for comfortable (and safe!) use. When we use the ladder to board we put it inside the zodiac. This gives it a better angle to climb, probably around 45 degrees, and essentially locks the zodiac into a really stable position on the boat. Best wishes for the season to all, Fred.

thanks for help

thanks to all for the info. We do live near the current location of the boat. I really haven't had the chance to inpect the stern railing to see if it in fact has a removable piece for the ladder to fit in. I remember the owner mentioning that there was a ladder. He stored most of the aux. equipment in a garage for the winter. I am really excited and a bit nervous. We currently have a 23' swing keel kells. This is a big step up for us. I am most concerned about running aground with the 4 foot keel on the 27 footer. We plan to sail the boat in Nantucket sound..cape cod , ma. Any hints about the boat would be appreciated. The prev. owner has been very up front about the boat. Unfortunately there isn't a roller furling for the headsail. I hope that this will be ok. I didn't have on the 23 footer and seemed to do fine without it. we are conservative sailors and stay home in questionable weather. I was told the yanmar 8hp is a bit underpowered but will run forever. thanks for any suggestions!
