I have a 1983 Hunter 22. The previous owner drill a hole through the transom for his gas line to his outboard engine and did not seal the edges. I drill some holes at the bottom of the transom to check from moisture, I didn't find any. I didn't see any wood ether. Is this ok or does it just have wood where the engine mount is.

If it is like the H23, there is no wood behind the transom, other than any wood such as what you describe - used as backing plates. Can you see the inside of your transom from the lazarette? I am not familiar with the H22, but on the H23 you can see the back side of the transom from inside the lazarette. It is just the glass hull.

You know I never looked to see what my engine mount is backed by on my H22. I have to run some errrends this afternoon, so I will stop by, and let you know how mine is set up. The other thing... your p/o just drilled a hole for the gas line?!? and didnt cover it with one of those rubber things? I will get pics of that for you.

It has a double transom. But it does look like it has wood only at the mounting area. Thanks guys.

I took a look at mine when I drove by this evening. My bracket has four - 2" to 3" ss plates backing each bolt. I took a pic but can't post it from here.

motor mount

My 23 has the original one piece molded motor mount that is beginning to look its age. Plus the motor I have sits to far down for my short arms. I have a Honda 5 that I bought in 2008. I was going to order at some point a Gerlic mount that is sprung for 4 cycle engines so it comes up easy. My question then is can I raise the mount some. The motor has a 20inch shaft and it is plenty deep in the water. If I could get between 3 and 5 inches higher, that would make me happy. The question is, is there is wood in the transom as a backing plate , if I raise the mount am I going to have a problem. As far as the gas line mine just runs over the transom, it is messy and inconvenient but that is a small thing. I also have a wire that runs above the transom for the portable depth/fish finder.

My H23 has a upgraded mount with a beefy 10" square 1/8 thick stainless backing plate. I just bought it recently and it came with a 9.9hp with electric start weighing 70 pounds.
