I have a 1990 30 ' catalina and am having trouble shifting from forward to reverse and back.,I must slam the lever from one to another,could it be the trans or just the shifter. Help Suds

hard shift

I would use a process of elimination. Disconnect the cable from the the trans shift lever, and then move the actual cable back and forth from your cock pit lever if sticky maybe your problem is in this component . If not try shifting the actual trans lever by hand if stiff then your problem is probably in this area

replace 'em

i had a the same problem. we ended up drilling a hole in the shifter on the engine to improve the throw. i also replaced the cables and was amazed at the difference in shifting quality. the throw on my 89 cat 30 seemed to long and the shifter slammed the pedestal before we drilled the shifter and slightly altered the shift throw. good luck.
