All, I have a 1984 Catalina 27 with the 14 HP Universal diesel and Hurth transmission. All was working well when I put the boat to bed in the Fall. Today I started the Spring revival process and noticed that I could not shift into reverse. Neutral to forward is fine clicked in fine and there is no binding of the cable ..... Will this just clear up when I start the engine and shift forward and reverse ? Maybe this is normal ??.... the boat has nor been touched since Fall..... Anything else I should try before starting the engine ? Your thoughts much appreciated. Joe

JP What does shifting have to do with starting your engine? Until you put it in gear, the engine starting should not affect the transmission. When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid? Check the cable connections at the engine, even though you say the cable doesn't seem to be binding. Good luck, Stu

Try turning the prop shaft

Is your boat hauled? If so, have someone turn the prop shaft a little while you apply slight pressure to the gear shift lever in reverse. I'm no boat transmission mechanic, but I know sometimes in a car you have to roll a bit or ease the clutch out a bit to get it in reverse. Its like the teeth are perfectly lined up not to engage. Give it a try, can't hurt anything. --Greg
