Transmission Problems

How many Catalina owners out there have had transmission problems or failures due to improperly adjusted shift linkage. I just had this problem on a boat with 100 hours on it. I've heard of it happening on boats with 80 hours requiring transmission replacement. Is this a widespread problem? Also do your shift and throttle leavers hit the Edson Pedistal Guard? Regards, Chris

Is it a Hurth (Universal)?

My 86 model has over 1,000 hours with no problems. I change the fluid each year and check the linkage for proper travel. And never sail with tranny in FWD. Doesn't hit the pedistal guard, but comes very close.

yes, it hits

Chris- Mine hits the pedestal, just barely, and based on all the discussion and your situation, you can bet I will be checking the linkage for proper clearances next time I am on the boat. BTW- 200 hrs so far, no problems.

Yes it's a Hurth

Hi Don, Yes it's a Hurth. It appears the travel had not been adjusted properly from the factory. Catalina says this is a dealer prep issue, but I disagree. The dealer doesn't install the engine/trnasmission or the Edson pedistal. Regards, Chris

Adjustment

Hugh, The adjustment seems to be under the compass. By adjusting the forks on the ends of the cables you reposition the leavers more to stern and gain additional travel. Regards, Chirs
