oh that awful sound of your transmission slipping. backing out of the slip on sunday there was that metal on metal bellowing out of the engine compartment. worse than fingernails on a chalkboard! as for past history, the trans on the 1987 yanmar 2gm20f first showed itself suspect about 2 years ago with the same scream of pain. the old dockmaster suggested an ounce or two of transaid in with the transmission fluid. the firstaid worked and all has been well until the drain and fill of the fluid brought back the old deamon. and as always only in reverse? is it time for an overhaul or do any of out resident expects have advise? thanks in advance

To rebuild or not....

Ken, That's not good news. I'd serously consider opening it up and see what's goig on. Mojo, Yes the manual says it should be the same as the engine. There have been versions in the past that used ATF. Universal/Westerbeke uses ATF in most. Basicly I can't keep them sorted, so I look at the dip stick and it tells me. Ken: What oil are you using in the trans? Our 2GM20F uses the same 30wt oil that our engine uses. I would suggest that you drain the fluid and refill to the propper level. I believe that you are suppose to check the level with the cap set on top (not screwed down). These transmissions only hold about .3 liters. Overfilling can cause a real problem with these transmissions.
