We just purchased a 1980 hunter 33 and were wondering what is the correct placement of the transmission while sailing. Any help would be appreciated

What engine & transmission?

You'll have a lot better chance of having your question answered correctly if you specify the make & model of the engine/transmission. I don't know abt. Hunter 33's specifically, but most boats were available with a variety of different power options, some of which were tolerant of allowing the prop to freewheel ( trans in neutral) while others will self-destruct due to lack of adequate lubrication. IMHO, you're better off to not allow the prop to rotate when sailing.

motor is a Yanmar 2QM 15

after reading in the archives it seems generally reverse gear is used or neutral. Any other opinions would be appreciated

I have a Yanmar/Kanzaki combo...neutral is okay, reverse is okay, never in forward.

Between the engine and drive shaft.

Sorry could not resist. If it is a Yanmar combo it can be left in neutral or placed in reverse. Check the archives for extensive discussion on the topic.

Spinning creates drag

A spinning prop creates a lot more drag than a stopped prop. Purely for that reason, you want it left in a gear. Which gear is a question for your engine maker.
