As I eased in to my dock after a great sailing day on our 32' Endeavour, I changed gears I lost my truss on the prop. After I tied up I started the engine and looked down at the prop shaft and notting was rotating no matter what I shifted into. I this an internal or external issue? Regards, Keith

Coupler

Keith,

The Check the coupler. Has the shaft pulled out? Is the coupler rotating when the engine is in gear? If the coupler is not rotating it sounds like a problem with the reduction gear / transmission.

You are right the shaft coupling is not turning. I did notice that just before I lost the prop movement there was a thumping from below, when I started the engine up this afternoon the noise was not there. Keith

Probably a key in the keyway.

Keith:

It is probably a key in the keyway for the shaft. This happened to a friend of mine that was on a delivery of a boat to Hawaii. They lost it about 3 days out of Monterey, CA. They sailed the entire way to the islands.

Good Advice

Good advice given so far. Crank it up, put it in gear and first look at the coupler. If the coupler is turning, you have a problem behind there. If the coupler isn't turning, it's going to be an internal transmission problem. If the coupler is turning and the shaft not you have spun the key at the coupler. If the coupler and shaft are both turning, you have spun the key at the prop. Pretty simple to determine the problem, maybe not an easy fix.

Thanks for the advise. The shaft and coupling are not moving, must be the internal side of the problem. Can anyone, that has a background with these types of transmissions, give a hand on what I need to be looking for when I remove the drive train. Regards, Keith
