I've got a 1991 Hunter 28 with a 2GM20F Yanmar and I'm about to change the tranny oil. I was going to use SAE 30W, some of you guys are saying only to use SAE 10-30W ?

Best to check your manual or with a reputable shop. My 2GM20F is teamed up with a KM2P transmission and the manual specifies SAE 30W.

My manual recommends SAE 30w, same as the engine oil.

Transmission dipstick question

Here's a related question. We also have a 2GM20F Yanmar on our H306. I'm not sure of the transmission type. When we launched it this April, we put 30w in both engine and transmission, as recommended by a mechanic. The question: the transmission dipstick doesn't have any level markings that I can see. So it's totally unclear how far up on the rod the level should be. The dipstick has an orange plastic cap, and maybe a 3" rod going down into the transmission. There is one little line scribed about 3 millimeters from the bottom of the stick, but there's nothing like the usual high/low lines you see on a car oil dipstick. When we changed the oil, we had to just do it by the volume recommended, after pumping out all we could. Can anyone help with this?

Hi Ron, There generally is no high low range on transmission dipsticks. That 3mm line at the bottom is the the correct line. Fill it to that line and not above.

Fill Line

FYI, the shop manual says not to fill above the scribed line because a greater amount may cause foaming. Check the oil with the dipstick resting on the opening, not screwed in. It may be helpful to paint the shaft white, as it is often difficult to read the fill mark.

I guess we must have been foaming then, since I think we have the oil level about mid-way up the dipstick. Our first oil change was when the boat was pulled last Fall, so as I said, we did it by pumping it as dry as we could, and adding the recommended amount of oil. I thought that the fine line right down on the tip of the dipstick might be the fill line, but it is so close to the tip that it almost looked like some sort of end-cap was attached to the tube at the bottom. This is probably silly though, since such a simple and cheap part would have no need to have an end-cap crimped on. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Jay
