I'm wanting to change the oil in the transmission of my Hunter 31. It has a Yanmar 2GMF engine. The plate on the transmission says 20/30. I want to be absolutely sure about the type and amount of oil to use. Also, are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of in this process?

30wt.

Dennis: You are suppose to use 30wt oil for the trans. Do not over fill. I suggest that you purchase an owners manual, it will explain the installation of the fill cap. A little oil makes a big difference on these transmissions.

DENNIS, MY LOCAL YANMAR DEALER ...

says to use the same oil type that you use in the engine. I use Delo 400 30 weight. As Steve says it takes very little oil to fill the transmission. The 2GM on our H28 has a line at the tip of the dip stick, which was the fill line. If the oil looks clean it may still be okay. Terry

Don't Screw in the Dipstick ..................

.......... when measuring the level of oil. Just let it rest on the opening. And the level of oil is next to impossible to see on the dipstick so roughen the shiny surface by rubbing it with 60 grit emery paper. Hope this helps, s/v Island Hunter
