Can anyone tell me how I change the transmission oil? Is there a drain somewhere or do I suck it out of the dipstick hole like I do the engine oil. I have an 82 cutter with the 3 cylinder yanmar engine. I have never changed the transmission oil and it's time to do so. Had the boat 2 years or so.

Agree

Suck it out. When refilling, be careful not to exceed the right level. I use a West System syringe to make sure I avoid overfilling. The right level is that indistinuishable groove near the bottom of the dipstick. I substitute a wooden dowl with painted surface to see the pink more clearly.

change it often!

I haven't ranted about this in a while, so I guress it's time. Change your transmission oil often. It takes about a quart and you can't afford not to. I lost my transmission because I didn't take care of it this way. I just plain wore out due to dirty fluid. By the time I got around to checking and changing it, it had been too long and the damage was done. I can tell you that there are no parts around to rebuild it. I had to make adapters for a hurth transmission, in addition to buying a new transmission. We searched the world, literally, for parts the original one. This was over 4 years ago, so if there were a couple parts left somewhere that we missed, I would expect that even those are gone now. I recommend that you change it every time you change the engine oil. The first time do it several times. Change it, run it for awile, pump it out. Di it until it comes out clean. It will probably take 3 or 4 times if you haven't been changing it regularly.

Type of oil for gearbox/trans

The gearbox on my Yanmar has a nameplate that says it takes SAE 20/30 HD oil. My Yanmar engine manual, that covers several, models simply says to replace oil with what the nameplate says. Stopped by the local auto supply and can't find any SAE 20/30 HD oil. For those with gearbox/trans that don't use ATF, has anyone had any problem getting the SAE 20/30 HD oil? I too plan to suck it out with a syringe. I'll take Gene's advice and get on it soon. TIA, Mike s/v Charisma 82 H36

are you sure about atf?

my manual on a yanmaar qm15 says atf, but service people say 30 weight oil - a change. The 30 weight oil makes sense since it is a fluid drive.

Next step up

If you want to go whole hog, there is an ATF that is supposed to be far superior to what you get at the store. Royal Purple is about $4 a quart, as I recall, but it is what the racers use and is supposed to be just far above the others. If you were using 10 quarts at a time, it might not be worth it, but at one quart once or twice a year, I bought a case and it's still around.
