Transmission oil dipstick

I purchased a 1991 30T 2 weeks ago and am in the process of becoming familiar with all her systems. I went to check the transmission dipstick today on the Yanmar 2GM. It is located on the tranny bell housing and is orange. The instructions said not to screw it down so I just popped it back in the hole and pulled it out. Couldn't see any fluid. Previous owner had all fluids replaced in March and this oil probably has less than 10 hours on it. Am I not seeing any fluid because it is still too new and clear? I know when I change the oil on my car it takes a while before the dipstick shows oil, but at least I can see a ridge of fluid on that stick. The Yanmar manual indicates the transmission takes .25 liters. I've run the engine about 5 hours since I got the boat without any problem. Anyone have an opinion on whether I should add more oikl? Carl

Is it oil or ATF?

In either case, if it is new, it could be very clean and not easily visible. Use a white paper towel to wipe the stick. You are doing the right thing by not screwing the dipstick back in. Do you get a reading when you screw it in?

It's oil

According to the manual the yard should have usd the same oil as they put in the crankcase. I did use a white paper towel to wipe it off and could not tell in any liquid was on the stick. After putting it back in the hole the stck felt slippery when I removed it but still didn't show any real oil on the stick. Even when I screwed it down and back out, same thing. It's got me worried.

fill line

There is a line indented around teh dip stick near the end of teh stick. This is the fill line. When properly inserted the oil should reach the top of the line. The oil stays very clear (there is no combustion in the trans and hence no combustion products.) Mine fills with the same oil as used in the engine - check your manual.

Hi Carl, the dip stick on our 1989 H28...

showed full when the oil appeared on the very bottom of the tranny stick. Fooled me at first, too. Ours had the 2GM20. Terry

trans oil level

Carl, I don't have my manual to check but it seams to me that the trans takes more then .25 liter. If I remember correctly it take close to a full quart of oil. double check the specs and what ever it should be at the full mark. Yes it is hard to see clean oil on the stick but it not impossible to see. The fluid level should be clear.Try dipping the stick it oil to see what it looks like first then check the trans. If you still have questions drain the trans and refill to spec. capacity

NOT a quart

I also have a 2GM20(F) - the book says the transmission takes about .3 liter. The fill line is *very* close to the end of the stick - combined with new, clean oil, it's very hard to see the level.

.25 liter is correct.

Carl: That .25 liters is the correct measurement. I just posted the interval levels for servicing the different areas of the engine. The transmission oil should be changed every 300 hrs. When it starts getting old, it will start getting an odor to it and starts to turn a darker color than clean oil. Over filling it is probably worse than under filling so be careful. You should be able to stick your finger down the hole and see if you can sense any oil too. Try the paper towel trick or get outside in some good light, you should be able to see the oil on the stick.

Dipstick Trick

The instructor at the Mack Boring diesel seminar I attended suggested that you should paint the bottom of the dipstick. Just clean it well with solvent and use a good white spray enamel. It shows even the faintest, clean and new trans fluid.

Thanks for the advice

Really appreciate all the input. I did notice that the fill line is very low on the stick. I'll be going down tomorrow and check again. I think a flashlight is in order too. Carl

Make a dipstick for checking the level

I had the same problem of locating the oil level on the dipstick even using the "paper towel" method. I made a dipstick for the purpose of checking the oil level. I used a wooden dowel stick and a wooden circle cut with a hole saw. Put the stick in the circle and painted the stick flat black. Cut a mark on the stick for the proper oil level as compared to the original dipstick. It is easy to see the actual oil level. Note the wooden dipstick is for checking the oil only.

Wooden stick sounds good

Bob, I like the idea of the wooden stick. Should be easy to make and read. I'll try it. Carl
