I have an '87 Catalina (34)purchased this year. The manual.. regarding the Herth transmission.. says that 2 types of fluid can be used but not to mix them. Is current usage of Dextron III a replacement for both (the manual obviously being from 1987) and does it make any difference if it is mixed? I obviously don't know what was previously used. Suggestions?

Transmission Fluid

My suggestion is that you drain the transmission fluid and refill with Dextron III. It is not a bad idea to replace this fluid every so often and this way you can feel comfortable with the age and type of transmission fluid. Drain by using the same small pump used for draining engine oil. Be careful not to overfill. The fill mark is indicated on the dipstick.

dextron III

I agree with the last response. I change the fluid at the start of the season. We are not talking a large amount, I buy a quart every couple of years. When I buy a new car I note the position of every guage. Now down the road if anything changes I knowthat something is wrong. Same thing with a new boat ,even if its used. Start off knowing whats there. You can't fix it if you don't know how it works!!!or where it was when you last checked it.
