Transmission linkage

Replaced transmission cable last year on my 1985 Catalina (Universal m18 with Hurth trans) as it had snapped at the control arm. Same thing happened again this year. I now know that I applied too much force on the control arm while attempting to shift into forward but since the cable is only one year old, I can't figure out what caused it to break again. Ended up having to tap (with a hammer) on the trans. lever to get to move into forward. Any one know why this is happening and/or what can be done to improve the functions of the transmission? Changing out the cable on an Edson Pedestal is a real pain - attempting to get the Cable Holder back into the Pedestal takes the patience of a Saint, & that's not me.

Sounds like your transmission is jammed from corrosion at the shifter arm linkage inside the transmission case. Heavy lubrication from the outside of the trans. may help. But if the trans shifter is so stiff that you have to hit it with a hammer, then that's what's causing you cable to break. There is more resistance at the transmission, then the cable can take to bear the force required to shift into gear. When was the last time your transmission was serviced? Sounds like its time to do it. My Hurth trans. can also be hard to shift into gear at times. I lubricated mine heavily at the shifter lever & at the transmission side linkage & it helped a bit. Good luck & let us know what worked out.

Thanks for the info. Took a squirt can filled with oil and had at the shift arm. Letting it sit for the rest of the day and will try it again on Monday. Replaced the linkage but unable to reinstall that 3/8 bolt that is part of the little piece of plastic that both the trans & the throttle are held in place by. Plan to drill it out by about an additional 1/4" and add a stainless washer to support it once it comes through the housing of the pedestal. Again, thanks for the idea.
