Hi Gordon: My question is simple, my mechanic told me to put a little more oil on my transmission so the dip stick line is 1/2 inch below the oil line, he told me that being a sailboat this will protect it when healing. BTW I use the same oil as the engine Rotella 30WAny coments?

Oil in the reversing gear

The extra oil is not required. The lubrication is a "splash system". If the gear edges reach the oil, the rest of the unit is lubricated.  Not knowing the model of gear box you have, I cannot say if you have chosen the proper gear oil. If you have a Kansaki gear, you are right.

Sorry, I have a YANMAR 2GMF I repowered my boat a Hunter 27 1983 4 or 5 years ago and it was the best thing I have done to this boat, it gives me confidence ir rough weathar wich I din't have with the Yanmar 1GMThank youEd TamaraS/V Mastconfusion
