forgive the ignorance, but does one need to check the transmission fluid on the 2002 universal 25hp diesel engine?/ if so where?

Yes, it's very important to check it often. The dip stick is located on top of the tranny and looks like a bolt.
Dipstick
Remove the dipstick and wipe it off. Stick it back in but DON'T SCREW IT IN. Remove again. There should be a line about 3/8" from the end. That is the full mark.
