I have the little Yanmar Y3 with a cone type transmission it is brand-new only 300 hours. I have had everybody and their brother come in on what should be used as lubricant for the transmission some people say automatic transmission fluid Otherside 30 weight I finally got my hands on a Yanmar owners manual it recommends 30 weight without All detergent next question also I've had people tell me that I understand I shouldc fun my transmission in reverse under sail I've had other people tell me to leave it in forward I finally got a memo from the Yanmar company they tell me to leave it in neutral or otherwise transmission damage could occur does anyone have any advise for this newbie

Sometimes on a quite morning I can hear my prop spinning while under sail so I throw in reverse to stop that I would think spinning free would cause more ware than locked in gear

Neutral is what Yanmar wants.. It is what you should be doing with it while under sail. The unloaded spinning propeller puts so little strain on the transmission parts that no wear will be noticeable; just be sure to have the correct amount of oil in it and the type that is called for on the plate on the side of your transmission. Put eyes on it ..
