Transmission fluid - oil or ATF

The Yanmar manual for my 4JH3E says to use motor oil - grade CD - in the marine gear/transmission. The top local professional Yanmar mechanic says to use ATF - automatic transmission fluid. I'm looking for the opinions of my fellow Yanmar sailors as to what they recommend.

Use the spec in the manual, unless he can prove otherwise. Your mechanic may have had a brain fart!

the manual is right

the manual is correct, I alway use oil not atf. different mfg will recommend atf but that is a different trans, go with the manual for your trans !

Follow your manual

Follow the manual that came with your engine. Show it to your mechanic if he doesn't belive you. Some Yanmar transmissions use oil and some use ATF. Mine happens to use ATF but I've seen plenty that use oil. Usually as a backup Yanmar puts a sticker on the top the dipstick to the trans indicating whether to use oil or ATF as well.
