I bought my '84 Catalina within the past year and have found that certain things were only minimally kept up, the previous owner was a jury rigger with the It's my way's the only way attitude. I'm about to change the oil and don't know how long it's been since the transmission fluid's been changed, so I was planning on changing it while I was getting dirty anyway. What's the best way to do the fluid change and has anyone used Royal Purple? Finally, I was wondering how important it is to drain the coolant out of the heat exchanger to check the zinc, again I'm not sure how well this was maintained either. Thanks.

Trans

M-25 engine runs on mobil 1. Trans was flushed with Syn trans fluid to get rid of any older fluid then filled with synthetic trans fluid. The zinc on the starboard bottom of the heat exchanger will only drain sea water. If you are referring to the rectangular metal container attached to port side of the engine, there is a square screwed in drain plug on the side, This will drain most of the antifreeze. Don't forget the overflow plastic container in the port stern cockpit looker. Good luck. SH

Trans drain

I was talking about the heat exchanger, I'm gonna check the zinc. What's to get the old trans fluid out, looks like it will be a trick to get to it.

M25 Transm is Dexron III or Ford ATF, don't mix 'em

The transm fluid is most easily removed with a syringe or a small hand pump. Don't over fill, leave the dip stick loose, not screwed in, when checking the level.

check it cold

This might sound silly, but do you check the transmission level while the engine's running like you do in a car. I tried to check it this way, but couldn't read the dipstick, there isn't enough color contrast. I might have overfilled it, whick is okay, I planned to flush what I put in out anyway and add more to make sure all the old fluid was out. I assume you check the level with the engine off.
