01/28/2002 I have a 1980 model C-30. The forward/reverse control unit will barely move at all. I have checked the shift cable and it is free. Any suggestions on freeing this up besides buying a new one for $500.00 as quoted at the marina? Thank you

Try lube...

Try spraying some WD-40 or like oil down(from the highest end obviously) the shift wire(between the wire and the jacket). Be patient, it might take a while(1 or 2 beers). If water has gotten into the jacket then rust is your problem.... Good luck!

I would bet that it would be your shift cable. Try as suggested to lube it between the cable and the jacket..(it will take a while). Also, if you noticed from before that the shifting was more difficult after the engine had been running for a while, I'd be even more sure that it's the cable...as it would expand with the heat, and given age and deteriorated lube, the friction with the jacket makes it nearly impossible to move sometimes, although it may move quit freely when cold....it happened to my throttle cable. I needed my full weight to move my throttle when hot, but cold she adjusted easily.

Shift mechanism

Everyone rightly goes to the assumption that the problem is your cable (as mine froze as well). Since I just replaced it, I had a good look at the shift control (1981 model mounted next to the port cockpit floor). The shift knob should not freeze up, there are two bolts hidden (allen wrench) on the bottom side of the shift
