Transmission cable replacement

Hi All, I'm looking for someone who may have changed a transmission shifting cable on a Catalina 30 with a diesel engine. The salt water slinging off the shaft has got into the cable and siezed it. Looks like I will need to replace it through the pedistal. Because there is a compass in there I need to use a cable with bronse on the clevis side. Any advise would be appreciated. Hank

Just did similar application. Finally located cable for Morse Controls at go2marine.com. Hope this helps. Sean

Cable Replacement

Hank -- I did this replacement last spring. As the other post says you can use a Morse cable. As I recall the process was as follows: 1. Remove compass from binnacle. 2. Remove clamp holding transmission and throttle cables inside pedestal. There is a screw on the outside of the pedestal that holds this clamp in place (this is where I encountered a lot of trouble as the screw had bonded to the clamp. If you have this problem and want to hear my solution let me know via post and I'll explain). Disconnect the cable from clamp. 3. Disconnect other end of cable from transmission linkage. Note how it's connected and the position of the linkage in neutral to realign the new cable. 4. Remove the old cable. Some suggest running a messenger line as you remove the old cable but I didn't find this necessary. Before you remeove it note how it's run through the boat so you can run the new one the same way. Measure the old cable and buy a replacement the same size. 5. Run the new cable. Attach to transmission linkage, reassemble in pedestal. Test the new cable while still tied to the dock with engine at idle or just above. Regarding the clevis at the pedestal end, if you can use the old one (it screws onto the end of the cable) great, if not you can order a new one from Edson -- not too expensive. I was able to use the old one. When you reassemble the compass, be sure to twist together any electric wires for the binnacle light to avoid maganetic interference with the compass. Absent any problems with that pesky clamp it's not too difficult a job. Good luck! Mike Turner S/V Amity Long Beach, CA
