Newbee question. My trany sometimes sticks in reverse. Away from boat but
wonder what secret is to remove compass housing so can get down to cable
connected to transmission lever to lubricate? Other end fairly easy to get to. Thanks for any replies.

Are you sure it's the cable? Could be symptom of more serious problem. How many hrs on the engine?

I just dealt with same problem - didn't stick in gear, but very hard to shift. I think you want to be prepared to REPLACE the cable rather than lubricate it.

About 320 hours on my year 2003 # 245. Not sure if cable just a starting point to check. Thanks for your replies.

You can remove the cable at transmission end and shift transmission by hand just to see if cable was the problem. (I am assuming it shifted with difficulty, as well as sticking)

I haven't tried it on the shift or throttle cables but I did lube the shut off cable using a cable luber found at motorcycle shops. A sailor on the C30 Yahoo group suggested it and it worked better than I expected.

Paul,
Did you have the compass professionally calibrated after removing it? I've had mine off a few times and think I'll be doing it next spring.

Another thing to check to the cable holder. In order for the cable to work correctly, the outer jacket of the cable is held in place with a "U" clamp (you can see it rusted on the 4th photo posted by paulj). If that clamp is broken or undone it will prevent the shift cable from working correctly. As paulj's photo shows, this area is kind of poorly placed on the C310s. It's right in the spray zone for the stuffing box so it gets quite rusted.

I had taken mine off when I repainted my engine. When I put it back on I must have forgotten the lock washers. On a trip up to Gloucester earlier this year I dropped/furled the sails and turned on the engine to get ready to go up the Blynnman Canal. When I went to put the boat in reverse while holding position waiting for the bridge to open, it wouldn't go into reverse. I had been having some problems with this when we left and figured I would check it out further once at the dock at Cape Ann. We skipped the bridge opening and went to grab a morning. I checked in out and the U clamp had fallen off. I replaced it and all worked fine.
