Transmission bangs going into gear both f and r

I have a 34 hp yanmar and when I shift from neutral to forward or reverse, the transmission bangs into gear. Once it is in gear is operates fine in both forward and reverse. Has anyone experienced this - and are there adjustments to the transmission to smooth the shifting step? I would appreciate any thoughts out there. Sleepless south of Seattle.

Folding prop?

Is it a new sound? I have a sharp noise especially when shifting into forward, but I am told it is the folding prop engaging.

My RPM is at 850 ... So I will first check that out .... This has been an issue for a long time .... however, someone told me that that noise was not normal.... so the concern. thanks for the replies.... a couple things to check out....
