Translucent Areas on Topsides

Curious

Has anyone noticed translucent areas on their topsides when bright sunlight shines on them?

I have read that this can be caused by thin gelcoat or by thin interior flowcoat.

I had a 1973 Oday 23 with this problem. When the sun was strong I would see light in the bow part of the hull. In later years I would have a few beads of water that would weep in this area under the waterline. Practically speaking it didn't make much difference what was causing it because it didn't worry me enough to fix it. I thought it was Odays way of minimizing construction cost.

I had some translucent places on an O'Day 27 and Columbia 28. I also saw some on the hull of a Catalina 30. Never had any concern about it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I wonder why some boats suffer from this and others don't.

Does anyone know what causes it?
