If there is a good anchorage Only stay every other night at marina and sleep on hook for free marinas usually don't have check in times so you can stay from marina opening first thing in morning till next afternoon then go out on hook till next morning

@Scott T-Bird ,
Dick was just telling us that the Captain's Inn, located in Forked River is a good day trip destination for lunch. We need to check that out.
@lehighsail,
Thanks for the suggestions. Gives us some ideas.

On Lake Ontario, Canadian side, the rates vary from about $1.50/ft to $2.50/ft for sailing/yacht clubs. Not sure of marinas, I avoid them. Reciprocal deals vary also, some clubs are 1st night free, some are 2nd night free (at least 2 have first 3 nights free!).There is a very nice club that has a $35 flat rate and wonderful facilities, including a pool.

Cheers

there's a nice PA state park marina on the delaware river , relatively inexpensive ... and most PA SP marinas have ice , gas, laundry and hot showers.

When I go near Tices Shoal, I always feel like I'm going to run out of water far off the shoreline. We have 3.8' draft ... how close can you get to the dock at the walk-over?
We had a 3'8" draft there many times. You can't really get close enough to walk over to the shore - we always took a dinghy in from where we anchored. On a weekend you wouldn't really want to be anchored closer in than the 4' area anyway, as it's just too crowded. Weekdays are better. There is a sand bar pretty far off shore that may make you think you're running out of water, but then it gets deeper again. Go by there and look at where some of the slightly larger boats are and you'll get an idea on where it's safe. Reaching back and forth between Tices and Forked River in the prevailing afternoon sea breeze is perfect, although it may leave you with a tough upwind battle back to your marina if you're not staying out for the night. Be sure to come in directly from the west. It's shallower from the North and south. (Disclaimer - this is all before Sandy; not sure how that has changed the contours).

The Chesapeake is mostly $1-1.25/foot, power extra.
Unless you are in St. Michaels where the going rate is $2.50/ft + power and they seem to fill the transient slips.

Hey,
The marinas on the Long Island sound are usually in the $3-4 / ft range. Plus another $30-50 for electric.

FWIW,Tice's shoal is a great anchorage. As mentioned not so good on weekends due to the influx of hoards of...er...let's say inexperienced boaters. We draw 4 ft and can get quite close - enough to wade in the rest of the way in to the boardwalk.
As for the transient fees, Lavallette is probably one of the most expensive on the Jersey shore. But if it's close to where you want to be, probably the best you're gonna do.

By the way Scott... I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the boat unattended overnight at Tice's.

I've paid as much as $10.50+ a foot a night in Fla at Pier 66 or Bahia Mar for the 4th weekend. What else would one expect from a Fla marina but price gouging?
