Hi all,

Just got a new toy for my Cat.30. Bought a Garmin 541s combo GPS/Chartplotter/Sonar.

I'm replacing my old Autohelm Tridata and was wondering if I can get away with using the old thru-hull transducer?

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks for any help and Happy Sailing......

It depends.... as the transducers may very well both be made by Airmar, which is the largest OEM transducer manufacturer. Generally, if the wiring is the same color and number, the transducers are likely to be compatible.

I used the Raymarine ST60 supplied transducers with my TackTick instruments for the first season I had the TackTick gear installed... so it is very possible.

However, Garmin may make their own transducers...in which case, you're SOL.

i bought an st60 sounder last summer and installed it in my h30 hooking it up to a mid 80s datamarine transducer with 2 wires where as the raymarine had three just guessed what went where and it works like a new one!

Thank you both. I guess it will boil down to my trying it out. My only concern is whether it might do some harm to the new unit, if I connect the old transducer?

Other than that, it sure would be nice to save the $100 bucks or so, to use it on something else......

I'd point out that a fishfinder type depth sounder is likely to be a bit different than a sailboat fathometer type depth sounder... since one is probably dual frequency and considerably stronger than the other.

If the Garmin came with a transom mount transducer, you can just stick it to the hull with toiletbowl wax or epoxy and shoot through the hull, I did that and added a speed/temp throughhull sensor for $100. A lot cheaper than the threeway sensors Garmin sells. They recommend not cutting wires on their transducers as I recall.

Thanks for the info. This unit did not come with one, so I was hoping I could get away with not having to buy a new one.

I am going to give it a try tomorrow, but I think I probably won't be lucky enough to skate on this one.

Turns out I am SOL.....

Hi all and thank you for the info,

It turns out that the Garmin plug has 5 holes and the X-ducer has only 2. It may only be a single frequency X-ducer and the unit requires a dual frequency.

So, back to West Marine to pick up a in hull X-ducer.

Thank you all again for your suggestions and Happy Sailing,

Ralph
