Transducer...

Just received my new transducer from Moor electronics and after reading about them I decided to just mount the transducer in the hull not thru it. However the instructions suggest not to use a water box or wax. Wonder why?

I currently have a thru hull (that is not working) that is the same size as the one I just received. The directions also say that they include a "dummy plug" so I can remove the transducer while the boat is "afloat" to clean it. My thought is, if that's the case, why not remove the old one and just stick in the new one...
I have also read about people using a plunger outside the hull during this process to keep water flow at a minimum...???
The boat was just launched a few months ago so it won't be out of the water for a while.
Suggestions or experience??
Thanks,
Scott

Airmar recommends filling the interior of in-hull cavity with antifreeze, the red non toxic type. The bottom of the Xdcr needs to be in a liquid or gel, and will not work in air. The the sound waves it generates for an inhull installation will be degrated, but should still be strong enough for 100ft. They recommend testing performance by taking a reading at 100 ft with the xdcr hanging off the side of the boat held in place to a PVC pipe or so, then comparing readings with the xdcr held in a plastic bag filled with water against the planned in-hull location.

See installation instructions for P79 in-hull xdcr at Airmar site.
