transducer location

Anyone mounted a thru hull transducer on a 23 o'day? I'm attempting this but I've been unable to locate a spot inside the hull where I can get an accurate reading. I've followed the manufacturers directions without any luck. It works accurately when hung over the stern but not inside the hull. Any tips or ideas?

Try In front of the keel

My transducer on a 1973 Oday 23 is glued down just in front of the keel, slightly to port. The transducer has a slightly beveled bottom so that it shoots straight down through the hull. It was in when I got the boat; seems to work fine. This location is very near the knotmeter wheel unit on my boat, with easy access to it through the vee-berth hatches. You may not get a good signal if just testing it without fully bedding the transducer to the hull (see instructions) for a clean shot.

if the area under the bunk will hold water, just put some in and set transducer in it to see, also check that the place you are mounting is under water. if it works, pump it out, dry, and attach transducer, would recomend taking the time to clean the surface where mounting, sand flat etc. there can be NO air bubbles in sealer between transducer and hull. bad reading in a spot may indicate a air pocket in the glass so check around before bonding.

Transducers won't work in air

So you have to add a fluid to test the location. Water is ideal. I'm sure you know that you should use epoxy to attach transducers internally - it has about the same "sonic" properties as water. Use slow cure epoxy, otherwise you'll never get the air bubbles out and suffer with a crummy reading.
