Trans Monroe was a great success; plenty of boats (26), fair wind and a classic Florida day; mostly sunny and mid 70's. Awesome BBQ after the race, plenty of beverages, whatever your poison and overall, just a great day of competitive sailing. Trans is a 12 mile course, essentially circumnavigating Lake Monroe in Sanford Florida.
We got a horrible start and a cluster of boats fouling each other in front of us didn't help. Came out, crept through the short upwind section through the set of gates, tacked around off the wind, watched about half of those ahead of us pop their chutes and off they went. Got to the first mark wound up about 16th at best once we were up and running on the two mile second leg. Sucked, but did make it fun coming through the pack... ;-)
We traded places with a number of Catalinas, SJ21s, Precision 23 and another Capri 22... all really good fun.
The wind got lighter as the day progressed but never dropped below about 5mph, so it wasn't ever horrible. Spinnaker rigged boats got us when and where they should, but the last decent leg (before a short upwind finish section) was pretty much a broad reach and we ended up getting a number of them back, I think 8th mono-hull over the finish line, correcting out to 10th, (as opposed to 11th) a result of Fisk Hayden having a prior engagement. ;-)
