Hello I have an on going project with a 1977 27ft hunter thats still on jacks but I'm trying to get her ready to launch by June. While sitting for 3 years the cabin filled with water and the engine was partialy submerged. I got the engine running 2-3 minutes at a time this weekend I'll hook up the raw water intake and discharge and let her run for awhile. My problem is the trans filled with water which I have half drained but the oil is so thick its clogging the pump My question is can I let the engine idle with the trans in nuetral to warm up the oil water mix or will that damage the trans. I've been told to flush the trans with kerosene after I drain it but I've got to get that stuff out first. thanks George

You can try a hand pump with a rubber or plastic hose attached so you can get it down to the bottom of the sump area or the transfer case. Or an electric pump, whichever you have on hand. If you get some, or alot out, you can put your kerosene, or you can use diesel as well if you are going to take it out right away. I wouldn't run it to long with that concocktion in the transfer case. If it is a Yanmar, you can put the same oil that you use in the engine for the transmission. There should be a dip stick on top of the case with a mark on it for full.
I am only suggesting this, I have never had to take water out of an engine or a transmission before. Hopefully you changed all of the filters and run oil a couple of times through the engine before you run it for any time.
Good Luck. :D

How about adding the kerosene and trying to mix it with the existing congealed transmission oil. Those tranmissions only hold a pint of oil or so.

Probably would work, Shadow.. The downside is that once the engine is running, the gears and bearings are turning in that goo and whatever is in there will end up in all the bearings.. It would be better to squirt in a cup or so of kerosene with the pump, putting the hose against the bottom of the case.. then pull out whatever you can get out.. you'll need a pressure/suction hand pump , something like this:

Again, ya gonna have to do that several times .. I would not run the engine until I got as much of the old goo out as possible .. Good luck with it, George..
