Hurths

Should be about a pint. Just so it's above the line on the dip stick.

Try this link...

Your C30 should have a Universal M25 like my C30 1987 if so...check this link out: http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/200157/universal-owners-hurth-transmission.html According to this manual, the M25 is equipped with a Hurths HBW50 tranny and requires .29 Quarts. As mentioned by Pat, your level should be checked by reinserting the dipstick into the tranny without screwing it back in and the oil should be at the mark on the dipstick. Have fun! Ghislain

Hurth Transmission Fluid Capacity

According to the Universal Operation and Maintenance Manual you Fluid should be "Type A Transmission Fluid and has a capacity of 1.3 pints or .55 liters. Hope this helps.

Hurth transmission

I just replaced mine for the second time. The difficult part is removal of the old, you won't get all of the old out by pumping so make sure you don't overfill and finding the correct fluid was impossible. I switched two years ago to type AF and no problems.

New Tranny

I have recently experienced problems with my transmission as well. Engine was running hot and we literally seized up. 1) Mechanics tell me we need to replace. 2) Anyone have an idea how long this job should take on an 84 Catalina 30 and further does anyone have a quick fix for how this operation should be performed. 3) I would love to hear any feedback on the subject and much thansk in advance. jeffreyallman@yahoo.com

Jeff, That's all bad news

Unfortunatly everything you wrote is not good. It appears from your post that a repower is necessary. I recently did one for a neighobor it took about 25hrs. Look at the Universal M3-20 for a replacement engine. It's a great fit with only minor mod's needed. You can cut down on the time necessary by removing your galley counter ahead of time. Consider the following when you have the engine out; Replacing the water lock muffler. Replacing the exhaust hose. Painting the engine room. You'll most likely need to replace the control cables, and add a cut-off cable for the new engine. Pat

Ouch

Pat.. thanks for the insight I think! No really-- much thanks for your expertise. From the sounds of it they feel it is simply the transmission.... am I crazy to believe that this is going to be all it takes? There appears to be no H20 in the engine as the dipstick still shows oil etc.... Looking forward to having this complete and much much thanks for your advice and insight. Happy to sailing to all on this long weekend... Best regards, Jeff

The Universal manual is WRONG!!! IMPORTANT

From a post above: Hurth Transmission Fluid Capacity According to the Universal Operation and Maintenance Manual you Fluid should be "Type A Transmission Fluid and has a capacity of 1.3 pints or .55 liters. Hope this helps. THIS IS WRONG. MANY YEARS AGO THIS WAS CORRECTED ON JUST ABOUT EVERY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL CATALINA ASSOCIATION WEBSITE FOR BOATS WITH M25 ENGINES. The Hurth for the M25 engines is the HBW 50. THE CORRECT AMOUNTS ARE: 0.73 PINTS OR 0.31 LITERS. Stu

Jeff,

If the trans was nearing lock uo then it would increase the work on the engine and increase the running temp. The best way to prove it's the trans is to pull it out. You should be able to start the engine with the trans removed, and confirm that the engine isn't affected. Let us know how things progress.
