tranny damper plate

Lots of recent info on past replacements of damper plate M-25b xpb. I have some rattling noise at idle, could be the same issue, seemslike it may be getting worse this year. Any way to confirm the plate is going bad without pulling the engine? I have about 790 hours on 2003 build year. Is this something that gradually gets worse, shows symptoms, but you can milk it home, or does it fail catastrophically and leave you searching for a port to sail into? How many hours at failure? Obviously I would prefer to fix on my schedule instead of loosing the engine on a nice week long cruise. Any major warning signs before failure other than a rattle?

Thanks, Dave

Takes a while

Only way to really check is to pull the transmission. The damper plate will come out without removing the bell housing. Should take about 2 hours to get the transmission out. Bigger problem is if replace the damper plate, then you have to lift the engine up as a new damper plate with all of the splines in it will not allow you to wiggle the transmission back on.

It should be a slow progression to failure and you will have plenty of warning.

If you are having a rattling noise at idle, that is your warning sign. Here is the link to my write up on the project: http://svsmitty.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/winter-boat-projects-update/

I had the rattling noise and you can see from the photo how lucky we were that we were still able to use our engine last season.
Yup. Barely holding on.

I think you need to address this sooner rather than later.

Good luck,

Jesse

Jessie, which damper plate did you use as a replacement? My R&D 22B4 was worn almost through at 850 hours. I was hoping to get a bolt in replacement without making an adaptor like Witz did?

I believe I used the Sachs 1866-050-002. But I can't find the exact number in my notes. Sorry I couldn'tbe more helpful.

I used Sachs 10-1866-061-001. My notes read 10-1866-050-002 too small? Not stiff? Universal recommended
too small? Got mine through MER equipment inc, 338 W. Nickerson St., Seattle, WA (206) 286-1817. Others
may differ.

Larry, it didn't work quite that way. For example, C36 kippers with M35 engines had tons of damper plates issues while our C34 skippers with the same engines and transmissions did not. It's almost, unfortunately, the luck of the draw.

Her's the MER Equipment Part List for Plates
Use There Part No. 80100

Just Installed and it works great.

That's the part number MER 80100 I used and works really good. No problems on install.
