I RECENTLY PURCHASED MY FIRST SAILBOAT (ODAY TEMPEST)FROM AN IDIVIDUAL THAT KEEP THE BOAT IN A PRIVATE SLIP 200 MILES FROM MY HOME.AFTER SEARCHING FOR A RENTAL TRAILER AND PRICING NEW TRAILERS I DESIGNED AND BUILT MY OWN TRAILER.NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND MUCH INFORMATION ON THE ODAY TEMPEST I HAD TO BUILT A TRAILER THAT WOULD AJUST TO ALMOST ANY POSITION. BEING A NEW COMER TO THE SAILING WORLD I AM ASKING FOR ADVICE AND COMMENTS FROM OTHER SAILORS CONCEARNING THE MARKET FOR RENTAL TRAILERS. IS THERE A PLACE TO RENT SUCH A TRAILER? WOULD YOU RENT A TRAILER IF IT WAS AVAILABLE?... ANY COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Rental Trailers

The problem with a rental trailer market is that in any given chunk of the country everyone is going to want to use them at the same time. Here in New England June and September are the heavy launch and haul dates - not everyone does it then (We launch April and haul November) but most do. Even in places with year round warmth there is an off season during which you'll get all your demand. I think to make it work you'd need a fleet of rental trailers that all got used at the same time and were idle much of the time. On the otherhand, if you have a single trailer you want to rent you should haunt the classified pages of all the class association website - I bet you can rent yours without a lot of trouble. The lawyer in me feels compelled to add that you should look into insurance - you will not have homeowners under most policies if you are engaged in a for profit enterprise.
