Trailering with the kicker??

I just wanted to know from some of you trailering experts if you leave your kicker on the transom or remove it. I've been towing with it OFF. I have a 5hp Tohatsu which is very light but will some time be getting a 9.9 sail power 4 stroke. Does Hunter have an official position on this? Best regards, Dennis

MOVE

I mount mine to the "ladder" on the winch area of the trailer. This gives me a little more tongue weight. I find that I get less sway with more weight on the tongue.

Always on

I've towed my 23.5 thousands of miles, always with the outboard on the transom, in the up position. Never have had a problem, though I throw a line around the motor which I run to the aft mooring cleats, just to make sure it doesn't swing down while in transit.

Mine is on too

My Honda 9.9 stays mounted when trailering our 23.5. I do, however try to shift as much stuff as possible that is inside the boat up to the bow area. I've always left mine in the down position and have dragged it on the road once, with no damage. Alan

Ken, info on ladder mount

Ken Koons, how do you mount your outboard on the front trailer ladder? I have a heavy Merc 9.9 4-stroke that I have been hauling inside my Toyota 4-runner and it takes up a lot of space. I'd be very interested in more information on how you mount it, and a picture if you have one. Thanks... Brigg

I leave it on - however

I leave my Honda 9.9 on the transom of my H260. However, I don't just let it bounce around back there. I tie lines from near the end of the shaft to the top of the stern rail. I use blocks on the stearn rail and highway-man hitches to get it really tight so the motor can't bounce.

Brigg reply

Hi Brigg, I think the ladder rung/step shape on all of the trailers are L shaped. I put a piece of 2x4 in the L area and screw down the motor mounts as if putting the motor on the motor mount of the boat. I put an old kitchen hot pad between the bottom of the motor and where it would bump and bounce against the metal ladder. I then strap down with bungees and a big bike cable. This trick works for me. I have a 5 hp Nissan/Tohatsu 2 stroke.

Similar to Mike

When I bought my boat, I trailered it from Roanoke, VA to South Louisiana leaving my 8 hp Tohatsu on the transom in the down position. I tied a rope around the base of the shaft and to the trailer frame underneath to prevent bouncing. I would think leaving the motor in the up position would put additional stress on the motor mount by putting weight out away from the motor mount and acting like a lever. Although, I do like Ken's idea of easily building a mount on the front ladder.

Mr. Costello

I am curious who you got your boat from. That use to be my old stompin grounds and I probably commissioned that rascal. What motor do you have on it? Crazy Dave Condon

Motors

Over the years, I have tried about every motor on the 23.5. Heck, I knew of a dealer long gone of course who even dared to put a 3.5 on one boat for the Chesapeake Bay which I about croaked. 9.9 engines either two or four stroke are good engines but I do not recommend them for a several reasons. First, I find that if you apply full power, the bow raises up thus slowing you down as this is a displacement hull not a plainnning hull. You have to reduce power. Secondly, the cost for a new one is much more. Thirdly, the wieght alone and the additional maintenace costs. However, I have found that an 8 hp is the best engine for either a 23.5 or 240. Tohatsu which also builds the Nissan and even the small Mercury engines has announced their 8 and 9.8 hp engines(both have the same block) are now being offered in four stroke which comply with the EPA 2006 standards and Carb 2008 standards(3-star rating) emission reugulations. They are lighter weight than 9.9 engines. Weight of these engines will be appx. 81 pounds. That should be a good engine for the 23.5 if you want four stroke. I am not advocating any engine manufacturer but it has been a good mfg. for me as a dealer ever since I put one on the very first 23.5 August 15, 1992 at Smith Mountain Lake. Crazy Dave Condon

more info on motor hanging?

ken, i have a bigger motor (honda 8 horse) but am very interested in how you secure yours to the trailer ladder. this would seem to be the perfect place for all that weight given that it is completely secure for trailering. i looked at my trailer and don't understand where you put the board. is it mounted to the ladder or just held on by the motor screws? a sketch or photo would be helpful. thanks, ed

Ed et al

Hi Ed, You're right on the money. 2x4 goes behind/under the step. The screw downs for mounting the motor then squeeze the board against the back side of the step holding the motor secure to the ladder. If the screws are lower than mine this method might not work for you.

Thanx!!

Thany-you all for the replies! I'm glad to hear the motor will ride on the transom OK but I do like the idea of mounting it on the ladder!
