Trailering with O/B mounted

I want to permanently mount my Johnson 9.9 (2 stroke) on the outboard bracket of my 79 O'day 23. I am not able to lift that much weight and I can't always be assured someone will be there to help me at the launch ramp. I have a mast raising system so the engine's weight is my only problem now. I use an aluminum Fulton bracket rated to hold a 20HP enginme. I would attach some heavy duty rubber bungee cords from the engine to the stern pulpit for additional support. Is it a good idea to trailer the boat with the engine on the bracket? My sailing club members (their boats are slipped) feel it would be too much strain on the mounting bolts and the tramsom.

O/B on the road

I have an 74 O'day 20 with an electric start (heavy) 9.9hp that always sits on it's bracket. I don't know for sure but I bet it's rated for 20hp as well. (large for the 9.9) I've had zero problems with it. When I got the boat last summer I made sure the mount was well installed with a large piece of marine plywood on the other side to distribute the weight. After I saw that I've never worried about it and everything has been fine. I typically take the boat on the freeway at ~60mph. So, my advice would be to back it well and go for it!

hello jack, you should have no problem just be sure to bungee the lower end so that it won't flop around when you hit a bump. john

As long as it's not an adjustable motor mount....

I've got a 5hp 4stroke that weighs about 60lbs. I don't really have any other option than to tow with the motor on the mount. I had an adjustable mount that was quickly replaced with a fulton fix mount model.... I definately do not regret going with the fix mount! I used that Starboard "white polyboard stuff" as a backing plate and it works great. I just complete this project (installing the fix mount motor mount) back in June; but, I towed the boat from NC to Destin Fl and back (which represents about the same distance of 3-4 years of local towing for me). I've got a buddy with a Hunter 260 with a 9.9 Honda 4stroke. His motor is bolted to the motor mount and has had not problems. Good luck. --Hise

Side Note How do you like the 4 stroke

Hise How do you like the 4 stroke. I been thinking of getting one. I am using a 2.5 nissan on 19' mariner and it does fine because most of the time only use for few minute to get out from ramp up at Kerr lake. Thinking that weight of the 4 stoke is a lot to add but would love to get out of mixing oil. Les

Trailering with outboard

I don't think you have a problem with strength. The outboard gets lots of stress in the water. You do increase the odds of getting your motor bent or stolen. The real problem I have is that the motor is a shroud magnet. Every time I tried putting the motor on before putting the mast up, I've regretted it. Also check your tongue weight with the motor mounted aft. Should be 10% of total. May have to adjust something if you end up with too little tongue weight.

Motor Bracket

I had a 9.9 mounted on my P18 for a year untill i bought a new 3.5. weight is no problem. I take the new on off because i have it in the water. If i was on the trailer it would stay on the boat. Look at how many motor boats have kickers on them on the trailers.

No Worries

It's a good idea to secure the motor and mount so that any play is removed. We do it all the time, and have trailered over 3000 miles this year alone.
