Trailering with motor on the o/b bracket

I want to permanently mount my Johnson 9.9 (2 stroke) on its outboard bracket. I am not able to lift that much weight and I can't always be assured someone will help me at the launch ramp. I have a mast raising system and the engine's weight is my only problem now. I use an aluminum Fulton bracket rated to hold a 20 HP engine. I would attach some heavy duty rubber bungee cords from the stern pulpit for attitional support and install a larger backing plate for the o/b bracket. However, my sailing club menbers (their boats are slipped) feel that trailering would be too much strain on the 25 year old transom and the o/b bracket.

OB Brackets

I have a 1978 O'Day 23 with a 7.5 Merc on a stainless steel bracket. It's electric start so I trailer the boat with the motor attached. I have 2 other friends with nearly the same setup and they also trailer. The backing plate is a good idea. I don't break any speed recoreds and haven't had any problems.

Tough on the mount

Look at every powerboat going down the road and you'll see they have their engines attached. You can do it do but it is tough on the mount. The extension away from the transom works like a lever and creates some serious forces on the fiberglass The backing plate is a good idea. I would then go a step further and run a couple of lines over the transom to support the weight of the engine. Then lines from the engine to the trailer. The idea is the lines are loaded with the vertical forces and the mount carries only a compression load keeping the engine away from the hull. Think about it like you mast and rigging. Can you share your thoughts on your mast raising system to a new owner of a 240?

Mast raising system

There was a factory system made for the O'day 25. A copy can be found under manuals section of the 25 site. They used a bracked to attach the boom to the mast. Using two guide lines, the backstay, and the mainsheet (reduced to a 2 to 1 purchase so it will reach the top of the boom, you are able to raise the mast from over the bow. When you see the orginal sheet of the system, you will notice that the picture showing the two possible attachements used to attach the mast is blurred. I have made several request on the "Ank an O'day Owner" site to find a better quality picture so I could make it up and use the boom. With no respose to my request, we made up or own design using a block of alumimum and a stainless steel strap. It works very well. However, the ginpole is just another piece of equipment I must carry. If you could use the boom, it would be easier. I hope this helps you. Jack

OB raising system?

Maybe someone could invent a mast raising system that could also be used to lift the outboard on to the motor bracket. Now that would be something I could really use.
