It is normal to place the boat on the trailer, pull out of the water, then lower the boat until the keel rests on its cradle... the real question is about how much of the weight on the keel and how much still on the pads? My boat is a 280 but the same as the 272LE.. Thanks in advance: Jim SV: Why Knot!

Jim, Although I don't haul my 272 on a trailer, it is still supported by a cradle when it is stored for the off-season. I have assisted in the lay-up of my boat for the past 6 seasons, helping the marina personnel whenever possible. When we settle the boat on the cradle, we line up the small black tapes on the hull sheer with the cradle supports. The hull is then carefully aligned vertically to make sure that it conforms to the shape of the cradle (which came with the boat when it was new). Boat and cradle are then transported to the storage location and lowered from the marina hydraulic trailer onto concrete blocks which are supported by large treated plywood pads. Additional blocks are added along the longitudinal supports of the cradle to help distribute the weight of the hull. After all this is done, a plywood pad is slid into place beneath the wing keel and a combination of concrete block and wood shimming is put into place to support the keel. The blocking under the keel is intended to support ONLY the keel. The marina owner who has also been personally in charge of all layups assures me that this is the way it should be done, and I have no doubt that he is right. There are no problems with either the hull or keel which could be related to the layup procedures. When the boat is on the trailer, it should be supported in the same way... no load on the keel, just enough support to keep it from distorting the hull. Tom
