I'll be glad to do that tomorrow as two hands aren't enough. You may want one more measurement. If the boat is placed fore or aft on the trailer the tongue weight will change. Enough to matter? I don't know. What would you like? I could e.g. measure from the ball center to the drain plug. My boat is a second generation (#2505) and you are first generation (#120 I think) so that might not work. Perhaps I'm overthinking it and what you asked for is sufficient.Alan

Alan, I doubt that the center of gravity has changed that much form series 1 to series 2. I'm also not sure how the Series differ on the drain plug placement. I've never measured mine but I do know that the series 1 bilge is much shallower than on the series 2. I did have the Vega Sonia (nicknamed Oops) that I bought as salvage years ago after the sports fisher T boned her and prop walked across the cabin. She was a series 2. Perhaps Steve has some comments? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I towed my Vega from Tok to Soldotna Ak (550 miles) thru mountains and snowstoms on a dual axle homemade trailer. It did well. Having a F250 diesel made all the difference. I cannot see how a lesser vehicle would tow it adequately. I just purchased a triple axle trailer with 18,000 lb capacity to put under it. The reasons: high cross winds going down the road made it sway heavily with a dual axle, next was the load carrying capacity of a single tire if one of the dual axle tires blew out. My Vega was fully loaded with stuff and weighed more than empty weight. The single tire on a blowout would be weight compromised in a dual application. Make sure you can get the best trailer brake system that money can buy (not surge brakes). I had to drive thru Anchorage traffic. I had to slam on the brakes a couple of times due to idiots that should never have been driving in the first place. My heavy duty brakes on the F250 made the difference. A lesser vehicle would not have been able to stop in time. So, if your going to tow, get a proper tow vehicle. My truck (super duty) has a max tow weight of 12,500 lbs with a Max towable weight of truck and trailer of 18,000lbs. The truck weight is 7400lbs full fuel, the trailer was approx 1500lbs and the boat was approx 6500 with all the gear.It was close to exceeding the gross weight tow capacity. So what I am saying here is if your in a accident while towing the insurance company may not cover you if you exceed the vehicles gross towable weight, not just the listed tow capacity. You may want to check to see if a Toyota can do that.

What was on my mind was the possibility that the drain plug on first and second generations might be located differently. Also, if you desire greater tongue weight perhaps it is easier to merely locate the boat on the trailer further forward. At any rate I'll gladly get you the dimensions you desire. For those new to trailering, keeping the tongue weight in the range of 10% to 15% of the trailer + load weight is important to minimize sway. Whether I approve or not (not that anyone cares!) people tow 8,000 pounds and more with ½ ton pickups all the time. IIRC my ¾ ton F-250 with it\'s gas engine has more torque than the older 7.3 L diesel (albeit at a high engine speed). Six speed transmissions make that work well. No one said anything about hitches. 8,000 pounds of boat and trailer will need 800 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight for stability. If the tongue weight on my specific truck exceeds 600 pounds I need a weight distributing hitch. Anyone new to trailering who has a similar situation will need to learn about WDHs. I\'ll be glad to try to answer any questions. Alan

A proper tow vehicle is inclusive to trailering a sailboat. Dont take my word for it, consult the auto manufactures website and search under TOWING. Enter Make/ year model. Plug in the weight numbers and see what the manufacture says. I think you will see that 8000lb might be too heavy for a 1/2 ton pickup. Now, people unknowingly do it all the time and get away with it, until fate steps in. Why take the risk? My uncle in Utah works for a law firm that represents clients who insurance refused to cover due to circumstances. Let me tell you, when investigators say you exceeded your tow capacity after an accident, you will have no chance of insurance coverage. If by chance you plan on towing your Vega once a year to the marina to play for the summer, use a commercial tow service. If more than that, buy a proper tow vehicle.

Hi All

Thought I would just put my two penneth into the
chat.

I used a heavy twin-axle trailer that had been made
especially for he Vega. I used an Isuzu Bighorn (3.1TD) same as the Trooper. I
towed four times and it was enough to put me off trailering my Vega for life. I
am a qualified HGV 3 both in the Army and after in civilian life but I felt out
of control. For the last fifteen years I have used a professional if I want a
Vega moved, great bloke called Garry McCourt who has his own lifting jack system
and trailer, insured up to £100k and takes all the worry and stress
away.

Series 1 Drain plug is higher and usually on the
port side, sometimes they have two.

Series 2 & 3 starboard side low down about 8
inches forward of the rudder shoe and about two inches up.

Cheers   Steve Birch

I'm really wondering about bringing that mast down. As it pivots down, the angle must be high to keep it from contacting the roof. There must be a 10' high brace needed, before I can remove the pivot bolt. I really don't think all that work, (and risk)is worth the trouble of saving the fees for a slip or mooring, but I'm stretched so thin, I thought I'd trailer it.

Craig, where are you located? All of the comments on trailering are great. I do appreciate all of the information. We use an 1994 F 350 3/4 ton 7.3L diesel as a tow vehicle and it works well. I'm probably okay with the present setup if I keep it around 55 mph (88 kph) but there were times when I was on long flat highways where I could have used a higher speed. Around 60 it would start to sway.My best tow story was driving through Los Angeles. Drivers there are very rude and very aggressive. Their traffic jams are unholy. Everyone gets so peed off on their daily commute that no one allows lane changes it might keep them from getting home a couple of minutes early. Anyway when I needed to change lanes nobody would let me. However a Vega on a trailer is actually rather intimidating when it starts to come into your lane. If they wouldn't let me in I'd just slowly start coming into their lane anyway. They would get out of the way! Dear Craig,Here is a clear video from Chuck Rose (his web site has plenty of information for Vega owners) about lowering the mast towards the bow of the boat. This system, as you can see, requires a frontally hinged mast step and thin ropes to keep it in the midline while lowering/raising it.Cruising Lealea Refit No.11: Dropping the Mast       Cruising Lealea Refit No.11: Dropping the MastView on www.youtube.comPreview by Yahoo Also search: americanvega.org lowering the mast (it is in the newsletter N° 14)There is another system, that is the one I have on my Vega and have seen on several Dutch Vegas. It raises and lowers the mast towards the the stern. It required a mast step hinged about 35 cm from deck and hinges on the higher shrouds at the same height, plus an arch in the foredeck that acts as a lever. The mainsheet block is perfect for the job.I found it on my Vega when I purchased her in 2011 and since then I have always raised and lowered the mast myself with the help of a second person.John Sprague described it and published in the section files of the Albin Vega Yahoo group (search with "Sprague").I have photos and details from my Vega but I do not know how to add attachments here. Bred and born in Brooklyn. Got out early though. Visits with family there made me familiar with traffic in NYC.To: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comDate: Tue, 5 Jul 2016 09:02:34 -0600Subject: Re: [AlbinVega] Trailering

Wow....thank you so much. I'll study up on the info you gave me, in my off time. My current pivot point , would be towards the stearn. I can see how you'd almost have to raise that step. I have some time yet. Thanks again. I'm sure, I'll be asking for your help later, thanks.

If you decide to go with a mast hinge, I would recommend Ballanger Spar for their hinge. It cost a little more but it was far superior to all the others I researched. I just installed mine and am very satisfied with it. My mast tilts forward like what is seen on Cruising Lealea youtube video. For the mast to tilt aft you would need a tabernacle. Either way it is not that difficult. Cheers

Leading with a fender..... i like it! Yeah, when you turn on your turn signal, it's letting that guy behind you know to close up that gap on the left. Im located in San Diego. How 'bout you??

I've written before about the Northlander Trailer built for my Vega Penelope #2133 in 2015 in Machiasport, Maine. She was towed from Maine to Florida & back last winter & spring, 1660 miles each way. I'll put pix on the website but for now here are the dimensions: Northlander Trailer 17' from hitch to front foot of keel18'3" from hitch to front edge of front tires8'2" wide - from outer edge to outer edge of fender6'3" width of bed from outer beam10'3" from "shoe" at front foot of keel to end of center beam at back end of trailer Overall length 27'10" - hitch to back end. She tows well for with a 2500hd3/4 ton Silverado pick up. For short distances on back roads - a 1/2 ton could do but really carefully & not at highway speeds. I had two different professional boat haulers tow her - one down to FL the other back to ME. They both said the trailer was one of the easiest they'd towed. The only problem was two flat tires, one each way, & the thinking of the truckers was the tires initially put on were not designed for long distance hauling at highway speeds. One must take care to insure there is sufficient grease in the hubs & check for heat at every stop. We put a jack, grease gun, spare grease fittings, flares, straps, chocks for blocking tires, wrenches, & a tire iron in a metal box bolted onto the tongue with the spare tire. Wiring was not designed to be submerged. Boat is lifted from trailer by a boat lift or crane & mast raised by a crane. For hauling, mast is laid on support on ladder built into trailer at bow, on wooden support on cabin roof just before hatchway & on a Y support bolted to stern railing & lashed down. Brakes worked well & we have an electronic brake away system, which was highly recommended by the professionals.from myphone nn

I'm definitely going to add this to my boat.I'll prefer the forward drop using the boom & mainsheet for the lever control.Since I have a trailer, I'll remain fully self sufficient for rigging and unrigging the boat. But meanwhile, I have a start from scratch refit to ponder.~ PeteAnnapolis

Walt:from top of coupler to top of first axle: 17\' 1½"from top of coupler to top of second axle: 19\' 10½"from top of coupler to end of rudder shoe: 22\' 8"In each case the measurements are centered over the ball and the center of the axle. The measurements were shortest distance possible. I made no effort to keep the tape measure horizontal and the measurements were as close to the center line as possible, but there was a boat in the way! The measurement to the shoe was to the last point where the bottom was horizontal. On my drive from Maryland to Colorado I had no difficulties. I didn\'t have the trailer or tongue weight measured. I used a weight distributing hitch with built-in anti-sway. In Kansas we experienced strong gusty winds off the stern quarter with no discomfort.HTH. I\'ll be glad to do more.Alan

We had a trailer built by Loadmaster Trailer Inc. from OH. I posted a few pics and we towed our Vega from Vermont to North Dakota with no problems. We towed with a Ram 3500 with dual wheels.
