Trailering Problem

Hello All,

New to the site and sailing. I recently bought a Coronado 23 mkII. When inspecting the boat (on the water), I neglected to notice that it does not have a bow eye. It has a trailer that has been modified for the boat and has trailered it before, but I'm not sure how/where to attach the winch strap. The water is way down on the lake where the boat is currently located, so I'm going to have to use a steep ramp to get the boat on. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

some will use a bridle and attach that to the bow cleats and then that line to the winch hook. Not really a problem.

Thanks. I had thought about this, but wasn't sure if the bus hooks should take that strain.

I would install a bow eye as soon as convenient. Nice to have and don't cost much.
Have fun with the new boat!

I used to own one of those.... They are a really nice boat. I gutted mine to bare hulll in and out so if you have questions about structural issues, I probably have a picture in my files.... ]

Install the bow eye with a large piece of trex or treated lumber as the backing plate ... this will disperse the strain. I'd recommend trex so you don't have issues with rot. Glass it into the groove in the stem (nose of the boat). Then drill the holes from the outside of the boat for the bow eye to slide into. Make the holes a little snug on the bow eye bolts. Squirt a little water in the holes and then cover the bolts with Gorilla Glue before you slide them in. Gorilla glue expands when activated by water and will make a water tight connection. Make sure you tighten up the bolts before the glue dries. Use some large stainless steel washers on the inside and you are done.

There should not be any strain, a line or if you want to use the winch strap it is just used to guide the boat into position on the trailer. A sailboat is floated on to the trailer and not winched on. Just use the winch strap to secure the bow while trailering. The bow eye does a good job restraining vertical forces but it is weak to horizontal pull forces. The great majority come with no backing plates or washers as that part of the bow is not intended to take much strain. Better to loose the bow eye than a chunk of the bow.
