trailering issues

Hi Folks,

I'm getting ready to pull the Vega I just bought out of San Francisco Bay
to trailer it a few hours north. Does anyone have critical dimensions on
the the Vega?--beyond what I have from the owners manual. ln particular,
how wide is the bottom of the keel at the widest point? Also, how many
men does it take to safely unstep and lay down the mast? I have the
article from Fairwinds, but I don't think I have the "tabernacle" setup
described there.

Thanks,
Nathan

Hey Nathan,

I have an Albin Vega on a trailer just north of Santa Rosa. I'd be
happy for you to come and take measurments if you would like. I
built the trailer for a 32 foot Islander, but it fits the Vega
perfectly.

Hi Nathan. Best to let the yard take the mast down. If I was desperate I'd
use the topping lift and boom as a crane. I'd use the mainsheet tackle to
lower it with but you might not have enough line in the main sheet to do so.
I'd have one person port and starboard with lines to the connections for the
uppers to keep everything centered. The mast steps on a stainless steel
plate. The plate has lips that stick up about an inch fore and aft. You
could probably pivot the mast on that lip but once again have some one to
keep it in place. Once the mast is down two people can move it easily. The
trough for the keel on my trailer is ten inches wide and there is plenty of
room left over.
Where are you moving the boat to? I'm in Crescent City, about 8 hours north
of San Francisco.

Let me repeat, Probably best to let the yard take it down! If you make a
mistake or something slips it could be very expensive not to mention
dangerous!

Walt's right, Nathan. If you don't have the tabernacle (Hinge) mast
step, best to have the yard take your mast down.

Forgot to mention the other way to take the mast down. If you are in a slip
and have boats with taller masts on each side of you it is possible to take
the mast down with the halyards of the other boats. We did this when we
replaced Lyrics mast with a newer one. Walt

Request for md6a parts. Boat was recently vandalized and robbed of electronics here in Boot key harbor, Marathon. Seeking temp guage, oil pressure guage.Found ignition in Charlston with good hearted Vega owner. Ruined my holidays but getting over it little by little. Thieves under investigation, know who did it. Thanks, Pat V# 2137

Pat,

That is awful! So sorry to hear about the looting of your vessel. I am glad that there are leads. I hope that this event did not cast too dark a shadow on your New Year and Holiday.I am sorry that we have no spare parts as we only recently purchased our Vega only a few weeks ago. There are some great people in this group and I am hopeful you will find what you need through the experience and generosity of the members. Keep us posted of your progress.
