I'm leaning toward the side that tells me to take the outboard off before i trailer my hunter 22. Is this right, or do people leave their outboard attached when they trailer?

I did both with my C22 and leaving it on led to a crack in the mount. Will never chance it again.

I have trailered boats for 40 years and have never removed the outboard. If something breaks, be thankful. It could have broken when you were out sailing and caused a major disaster. Jim

my 1984 Catalina 25. With the Garhauer adjustable motor mount in the up position I wrap thru the handle and around the pulpit with several wraps of rope. I tighten it up so there is little stress on the transom and most of the weight spread out over the stanchions. I have trailered this way at highway speeds for multiple trips from Kentucky and Tennessee to the gulf and east coast of Georgia with no ill effects. The motor is in place once I step the mast. A couple of squeezes on the bulb and a pull of the cord and I'm motoring out !!

You do not indicate what kind of engine you have. I have seen from 4HP to 15HP on trailerable 22s. It would depend on the weight and the capacity and condition of your motor mount. I always trailer with the motor on and it stays on the boat at all times. That is a 5HP, four stroke, 57 lbs Tohatsu.

When I tow my O23 with a 6hp. It takes a minute to secure it in the back of the truck. I know the roads up here in northern New England are rough, so I will take the time and take her off.

I leave mine on, hunter 260 with a
Honda 9.9, but I use a ratchet strap from the stern rails to support it so it doesn't bounce when going over bumps

whenever I tow an outboard boat I make sure that the weight of the motor is not completly on the transom, and is kept from bouncing. A small brace rigged up for the motor to sit in keeps a lot of the stress off, and preventing bounce by tieing it down works wonders. Most damage I've seen comes from people locking the motor in the up position with no other support or ties, puts a LOT more stress on the transom, or leaving it down and not locking it or tieing it which shock loads the transome every bump you hit. Ken
